Vision, mission and history of LGT Venture Philanthropy

LGT Venture Philanthropy realizes its mission by investing philanthropic capital in social organizations and offering capacity building support to strengthen organizational capacities.

Since its inception in 2007, LGT Venture Philanthropy has deployed USD 15 million to 36 organizations operating in four regions. In 2015, our portfolio organizations reached 1.2 million disadvantaged people, providing them access to affordable services and products covering their basic needs.

"We envisage a world in which all human beings have a fair chance to develop their potential, become productive members of society, and live under dignified conditions."

H.S.H. Prince Max von und zu Liechtenstein, CEO LGT

A shared vision

LGT Venture Philanthropy’s vision is embedded in LGT’s 90-year-old tradition of creating, preserving and increasing lasting value for all its stakeholders and society at large.

Based on this vision, H.S.H. Prince Max von und zu Liechtenstein founded LGT Venture Philanthropy with the mission to

  • increase the quality of life of disadvantaged people
  • build resilient, inclusive and prosperous communities
  • contribute to healthy ecosystems

LGT Venture Philanthropy realizes this mission by investing philanthropic capital in social organizations. We acknowledge that markets cannot address or solve all social and environmental problems. Philanthropic capital is needed to support effective, scalable solutions that address the needs of the most vulnerable people that have either no or very limited access to affordable basic goods and livelihood opportunities.

While with LGT Venture Philanthropy we focus on the support of social organizations and positive impact creation, with LGT Impact Ventures we implement our impact investing activities that target both financial returns and positive societal impact.

Since our foundation in 2007, a core set of values has formed the basis of our work, partnerships and definition of success.

Impact orientation
Creating positive impact and shared value is at the core of LGT Venture Philanthropy. We pledge to use the funds entrusted to us in an effective, efficient, transparent, ethical and responsible manner.

Long-term perspective
For everything we do, we assume a long-term perspective: supporting the growth of our portfolio companies, creating sustainable positive impact, and offering our team an environment to thrive in both professionally and personally.

Entrepreneurial approach
We are convinced that an entrepreneurial approach is one of the key drivers for successfully implementing and growing innovative solutions to social and environmental problems. With all our partners we share an entrepreneurial mind-set.

Competence
We pursue a broad regional and sector approach. Our venture philanthropy specialists have diverse backgrounds and are based in the regions where we operate. Our team combines a broad skillset with sector and regional knowhow that enables us to identify the most effective solutions and scalable models in growth markets.

Collaboration
We embrace cultural diversity and strive to foster an honest, open and constructive dialogue with all our stakeholders. We work and succeed as partners. We believe that true teamwork is the key to the quality of our work. We listen, value and respect the views of others, and above all the disadvantaged people we strive to serve with our work.

"LGT Venture Philanthropy has been a staunch supporter of Educate Girls’ initiatives in Rajasthan since 2011. Their continued support has helped us bring more out-of-school girls back to school with significantly improved learning outcomes. They have helped us achieve landmark milestones in our programs as well as promote our work at global platforms."

Safeena Husain, Founder and Executive Director, Educate Girls
