Governments spend over $5 trillion on critical social programs and public services like education or health in low-and-middle income countries (LMICs) annually. But despite these investments, development outcomes are systematically falling short of expectations and the urgent needs of global communities. For example, despite an increase in spending per student by 10% in the last decade, learning outcomes in LMICs have only improved by 0.8% Education Finance Watch, 2022.
Instiglio, a Global South non-profit with offices in Bogota, Nairobi and Rabat, partners with governments to transform the impact of public funding by introducing impact incentives at the heart of public sector governance, public finance and procurement. It supports governments through multi-year transformational partnerships that leverage their technical expertise in results-based finance and tech-powered performance management, with a deep understanding of change management in the context of complex public sector systems. For instance, its methods and approach have proven to increase outcomes by up to 130% in nationwide education and health systems, boost the adoption of evidence-based solutions, and have consistently spread long-lasting and motivating performance cultures across nationwide delivery systems.
In 12 years, Instiglio has empowered 500+ government leaders in transforming 25 government entities and influencing more than $750 million in development spending, impacting 55 million vulnerable lives through improved services.
Instiglio is now embarking on an ambitious 5-year movement-building strategy to accelerate governments’ adoption of impact-oriented governance, mindset, and performance cultures that drive the effective, equitable, and transparent use of public resources. The strategy will emphasize codifying and scaling these standards through a new global network of purpose-driven government champions and strategic partnerships with standard-setting organizations and major development financing institutions. A key goal will be to build a global government transformation movement that has the potential to reach over 160 million lives in the next five years, prepare societies for the challenges of the future, and contribute to re-establishing confidence in democratic governance systems.
We partner with Instiglio as part of LGT Venture Philanthropy’s “Thriving Communities” strategy to increase organizational impact and reach. Our support spans three areas of strengthening internal capabilities:
