Ahueni is a Swiss-incorporated, not-for-profit company established by a consortium of impact-motivated investors (including LGT Venture Philanthropy) with a shared purpose of developing responsible carbon finance in the Greater Maasai Mara ecosystem and beyond in a way that puts communities first. Operating across Switzerland and Kenya, Ahueni's flagship initiative is the One Mara Carbon Project (OMCP), a grassland restoration and carbon sequestration project developed in close collaboration with the Maasai Mara Wildlife Conservancies Association (MMWCA) and Conservation International.
At the heart of Ahueni's approach is the principle of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs). Carbon credits generated by OMCP are designed to flow proceeds directly back into local Maasai communities, increasing landowner earnings, creating local employment and funding community development. This diversifies incomes beyond tourism, which remains vulnerable to external shocks, and builds long-term livelihood security for communities who are the ecosystem's most capable stewards.
We partner with Ahueni as part of LGT Venture Philanthropy’s environment strategy to scale up the protection and regeneration of threatened or destroyed ecosystems. We provide comprehensive support across three areas:
LGT Venture Philanthropy holds a strong reputation with local communities and individuals. We benefit greatly from LGT Venture Philanthropy’s experiences as a long-term impact investor in Africa.
