Improved health and prospects for HIV-affected communities
Our partnership with mothers2mothers began in 2008 when the HIV/AIDS pandemic was devastating communities across Sub-Saharan Africa – with a disproportionate impact on women and children. Mother-to-child transmission of HIV was a crisis shaped not just by gaps in healthcare, but by deep-rooted stigma, fear and a widespread lack of awareness.
We knew that lasting change required more than medicine. It required trust. That conviction led us to mothers2mothers, a partnership that would run from 2008 to 2025.
Founded in 2001, mothers2mothers is an African non-profit with the primary objective of tackling mother-to-child transmissions of HIV by providing education and improving access to HIV-related healthcare services. The organisation has since evolved into an integrated community healthcare provider to enable it to meet the evolving needs of women, children and adolescents – its primary client groups.
We invested in mothers2mothers as part of LGT Venture Philanthropy’s health strategy to focus on models that design, scale, strengthen and sustain digitally empowered solutions to provide high-quality primary healthcare in underserved communities. We provided comprehensive support across three areas:
LGT Venture Philanthropy is a rare breed of donor – one prepared to invest flexibly into building the overall capacity of an organization for impact and scale.
